Editor's Note: In an on-air broadcast we incorrectly identified the organization involved in this alleged crime. It was the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist State Convention that reported the missing funds. We incorrectly aired video of Mt. Olive Galilee Baptist Church. There was no money taken from that church.
Almost $13,000 has been reported missing from the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist State Convention.
The embezzlement case was filed Monday with the Evansville Police Department by the president of their church organization.
According to the police report, another man, the organization's treasurer, is now a suspect.
Police say they believe he may have taken the funds by making withdrawals and writing checks to himself from the convention's accounts.
He has not been charged with any crimes at this time.
A detective with the EPD is now conducting a follow-up investigation.
"A lot of times when we get these reports, it's taken awhile for the victim to know that the money is missing," said Sgt. Jason Cullum from the Evansville Police Department. He explains "because it's usually done in smaller increments that people don't notice. So when we get the initial report, it starts a pretty in depth process of going back and checking the paper trail."
The president of the church organization today declined to comment, saying this is an "ongoing investigation."
