Ice building up in your gutter may cause an ice dam, backing up under your shingles and doing serious damage to your ceiling, roof and even electrical system.
Insurance experts say this kind of damage is typically covered by your homeowners insurance, and a house roof can usually only handle the weight of up to four inches of ice.
Lowe's Home Improvement experts say there are two options to help remove ice dams. The first is called a gutter coil that slowly melts the ice and prevents it from forming a dam. The second option is a retractable roof rake that pushes snow off the roof.
If you have an older home, experts recommend keeping the drains clear. As tempting as it is to break icicles off of your gutter, experts say don't do it. They are projectiles and could cause serious damage.
