TRI-STATE (WFIE) -
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the southern counties of Illinois and Indiana just across the Ohio River from Kentucky.
These counties could see ice developing in the early hours of the event today with a chance for 1 to 2 inches of accumulated snow, followed by another opportunity for sleet and freezing rain as the system moves out of the area.
There is a chance some of this winter precipitation will spill over into other Western Kentucky Counties, particularly those along the Ohio River and those specifically listed in the advisory.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Snow Teams for District 1 and District 2 will be carefully monitoring this weather system and place highway crews in counties that may be affected on appropriate alert or active response status.
The Winter Weather Advisory runs from Noon New Year's Eve to 6:00 a.m., CST, on New Year's Day.
If you are driving, you should be aware of changes in road surface conditions this winter precipitation may create in Western Kentucky counties.
Additionally, temperatures are expected to drop into the teens Tuesday evening after the storm passes to our north. This will create an opportunity for re-freezing of road surface moisture overnight Tuesday. While there is salt residue on area highways from earlier snow response efforts, salt and other ice-fighting chemicals lose their impact below about 20 degrees Fahrenheit. This requires extra caution if you plan to take to the road when temperatures in the teens or colder.
A copy of the NWS Winter Weather Advisory can be found below or at www.weather.gov/pah.
