Taxi service ready for New Year's despite the expected snow - Tri-State News, Weather & Sports

Free taxi service ready for NYE

With more snow and possibly more ice on the way on Monday, many worry about the condition of the roads when so many people are expected to be out celebrating New Years Eve.

One Tri-State taxi service tells 14 News that they're already preparing.

Bill Kramer, the GM at Unity Taxi says this year's snowfall hasn't stopped them yet, and won't stop them on Monday or Tuesday.

Kramer says Unity is always open 24 hours a day, and that will not change on either Monday or Tuesday.

He also says Unity will be providing their annual Safe Ride Home service between 11:00 p.m. Monday night, and 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

During those hours, those looking for a safe ride home from the bars or other areas of town, will be able to use Unity Taxi free of charge.

Kramer also says Unity is preparing for the expected snowfall by doing things like loading sandbags into the back of their cars and keeping extra mechanics on-hand to tend to the vehicles.

He says Unity is often responsible for people like doctors and other community servants who have to be able to travel, even during harsh weather conditions. Kramer says since those people don't get the day off, neither does Unity.

"The last snow, the city buses shut down, other transportation services shut down. Well, we didn't shut down. We run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Since 2008, we're the only transportation service in this city that's kept going non-stop," Kramer said.

We'll bring you more on what Unity is doing to prepare for the snow on 14 News at 10.
