Gifts returned after grandparents' Christmas gaffe

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Like many grandparents, Lynda Hubka tries to be fair with all her grandkids, and that means on Christmas she gets an equal amount of gifts for everyone.

But an accident on Christmas day threatened to leave one of her granddaughters short. As she was on her way to pass out gifts, the tailgate of her pickup truck, where the gifts were, popped open.

"When I went around and looked, we had presents missing. My son and husband drove back and forth and I drove back and forth on my route. Couldn't find them," Hubka said.

For Hubka, the realization was a moment of panic.

"I'm very careful to make sure all of my grandkids have the same number of boxes. I knew they wouldn't," she said.

Hubka says most of those missing presents belonged to her granddaughter Grace Gibson, who is, thankfully, an easy-going 11-year-old.

"She said ‘It's okay, Nana. Don't worry about it,'" Hubka said.

Despite most of her gifts being lost, Grace remained positive about the situation.

"I knew it would be alright because there are good people out there," Grace said.

Turns out, Grace was right.

"Early this morning someone turned in gifts they found on Pinewood Avenue and Cherry Avenue. Brought them up here. We put them on Facebook and the news and waited on someone to let us know they were theirs," Sgt. Brad Richardson with the Hueytown Police department said.

Hubka saw the missing presents on Fox 6 News at 5 and immediately called the police department. By 6 p.m. she and two of her granddaughters were reunited with the five presents.

"Just proves there are good people. It would have been so easy to just take them and keep going," Hubka said.

Grace says she never had any doubts.

"Thank whoever found them and God bless you," Gibson said.
