TRI-STATE (WFIE) -
A major winter storm has hit the Tri-State, leaving many counties buried in snow.
The storm moved in Tuesday night, first with rain and then a changeover to snow.
The nature of this storm system is resulting in very windy conditions, causing blowing and drifting of snow.
Only emergency travel is advised through mid morning on Wednesday.
A few notes:
*The list is of Tri-State counties declaring State of Emergencies is growing. Pike, Posey, and Gibson Counties in Indiana and Wabash County in Illinois have declared a State of Emergency.
*Indiana State Police were reporting earlier Wednesday morning that SR 165 from Poseyville to I-64 was impassable.
*ISP say road conditions are improving, but blowing and drifting snow continues to cause problems especially on east and west roadways. Most main roadways are passable, but drivers will most likely come across areas that are completely snow covered. Most secondary roadways remain completely snow covered and hazardous. Blowing and drifting snow will continue to cause problems throughout the day. Visibility has improved. Avoid driving if possible.
*Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and Commissioner Abell say the Evansville and Vanderburgh County offices will close early on Wednesday. For driving safety reasons, they say city offices will close at noon and county offices will close at 12:30 p.m.
