Changes at Owensboro's YMCA welcomed by members

It's been a big year for the Owensboro Family YMCA. The facility has undergone some major facelifts.

If you haven't been to the YMCA lately, you might notice those changes.

YCMA member Joseph Taylor says those changes have been welcomed by those who use the facility every day.

"I think it's been absolutely great. I think the Y's moving in the right direction, and I've been pretty pleased with what I've seen so far," Taylor said.

Taylor personally enjoys the upgrades made to the sauna area, but other members feel the overall atmosphere has improved, as well.

"When you create a little better atmosphere, especially for the younger people, they see that things are cleaner, and that makes them want to come back," Y member, Tommy Jones said.

The Y has added some new exercise equipment and taken steps to repair older machines. The pool area has also been outfitted with a new $16,000 pool heater.

Owensboro Family YCMA President, Arthur Harreld, is looking forward to more improvements.

"There are just so many things we're excited about that have happened, but probably the most gratifying is just to see the membership being enthused that their Owensboro Family YMCA is being attended to and improved," Harreld said.

Those improvements seem to fit well with why members come to the Y.

"I play a lot of racquetball and for the fellowship.  A lot of good people come here, and I enjoy talking to them," member Randy Embry said.

Up next on the list of improvements is completing the whirlpool area.

New swimming pool and whirlpool heaters and filters have been added at the Athenian branch of the YMCA.
