Some things to keep in mind when preparing for snow

Posted: Updated:

There is good news, with the timing of the snow. Children are out of school, and fewer people are working, but finding last minute supplies could be a challenge with most stores closed on Christmas Day.

The real story will be the early Wednesday morning commute.

If the models hold true, the roads will be a mess and the Red Cross wants everyone to be prepared in the case of an emergency.

That goes for on and off the roads.

At home, you need to be prepared in case the power goes out. The Red Cross says that includes a 3-day supply of water, non-perishable foods, a flashlight, and a battery powered weather radio. Get stocked up on your meds, and if you have a baby or a pet, don't forget them, too.

Of course, Tuesday is Christmas, so nearly every retailer will be closed. So Monday, some Tri-Staters went ahead and picked up some extra items in case they get snowed in.

"Some people are prepared some people are not.  Like I said, it is what it is.  Just prepare the best you can," said April Pruitt Thomas, who is stocking up.

"I got a little extra. I got extra milk and things like that hoping we won't be closed in and locked in," Lyndel Brennan said.

As far as the roads go, INDOT says it already has plows out laying down a de-icing solution on roads and bridges.

If you do have to travel, you may want to leave early and make sure you have an emergency kit, just in case.
