Holiday lights in Owensboro go dark

Posted: Updated:
OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

City officials in Owensboro are encouraging residents to join them in a show of support for Newtown, Connecticut and Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Downtown Owensboro is brightly lit right now for the holidays, but it's going to look a little different tonight.

All of the holiday lights will actually be turned off tonight as the city's way of showing its support for Newtown and remembering the 20 children and six adults who lost their lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday.

This is Owensboro's way of paying its respects to those victims.

But city officials don't want just the downtown lights to go dark tonight.

The Board of Commissioners encourages all residents to join them in this show of support and turn their Christmas lights off tonight.

It's a silent action that speaks volumes to show that your thoughts are with Newtown during this difficult time.

Just as a reminder, this is only for tonight.

If you don't live in Owensboro, but would still like to show your support for Newtown and Sandy Hook Elementary, you're more than welcome to participate in the lights out event.
