OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

An Owensboro church took time to remember the victims killed at Sandy Hook Elementary at their prayer service Tuesday.

People gathered at Faith Lutheran Church to remember the victims of Newtown, Connecticut at a prayer service. Pastor Lausterer told them it is important to remember the light that shines in the darkness.

They came somber and quiet, with the victims of Friday's shooting on their minds.  Mourners, here, paid their respects, not through words, but through candle light, silence, and prayer.

"There are no words for the deep grief our nation is experiencing right now. Just unspeakable sorrow our whole nation is experiencing that can not be spoken, but needs to be expressed. And this seemed like an appropriate service," Pastor Lausterer said.

Pastor Lausterer says the scripture readings, songs, and quiet prayers represent the need to listen because, sometimes, there are no words.

"Sometimes in dark times, we are invited to listen closely to the word of God because it can be especially difficult to hear praise, gospel, and hope, in such dark times," Pastor Lausterer said.

Owensboro city leaders are asking people to turn off their Christmas lights Tuesday night to honor the lives lost in the Connecticut shooting.
