KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

Peter Belmont was a popular and beloved breeder of Afghan hounds.

His body was found inside his home Sunday. He was the victim of an apparent homicide.

And apparently his killer let his beloved dog, Frankie, out of the house. Frankie was hit by a vehicle. VCA Animal Hospital in Mission is keeping Frankie on pain medication until the surgery is performed. Friends sought donations to help pay for the surgery for the friendly and well-liked 6-month-old dog.

And police are seeking clues to find the killer of the 69-year-old man.

"We're still numb frankly," said Patrick Byrne, the victim's friend for more than 40 years.

Police say the killer took Belmont's vehicle. The vehicle is a 2007 silver Honda Odyssey. It's legal license plate is Kansas 361-CPH.

In addition to being a respected breeder, Belmont was an credentialed international judge. He traveled across the world, most recently to Germany, and had further trips planned.

The dog community is devastated, Byrne said.

"He was an important figure," Byrne said. "He passed all his knowledge onto everybody. He shared it. Dog showing is a sport. It's competitive and lots of times people don't like to share. He always did."

Belmont's kind and caring nature is why his death by homicide has baffled so many.

"That's why we are so shocked. He's a very gentle person," Byrne said. "He was very boisterous and fun, but he was gentle with dogs and with people."

Friends say enough compassionate people gave enough money to cover the thousands of dollars in costs for Frankie's surgery. After he recovers, Belmont's estate will help find a new home.
