The Evansville Fire Department is working towards a more standardized training program in the area.
They often use hands-on training to teach recruits, including smoke house simulations.
This year, for the first time, firefighters from Boonville were also able to participate. Instructors say it's important because smaller departments may not have the money to spend on their own training division.
"The chief is trying to get other outside, smaller departments who are maybe not as fortunate as we are to have a full-time training department. And create more of a standard of training across the southern part of the state," said Mike Larson, EFD Instructor.
The EFD is looking for funding to update their training facility. They say it could cost upwards of half a million dollars.
