Daviess County school officials hold meeting on $66 million "facilities plan"

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

Daviess County Public Schools will have a public hearing Tuesday for people to give their thoughts on the district's $66 million "facilities plan."

Earlier this month, the Daviess County Public Schools Planning Committee presented a $66 million list of repairs, renovations, and upgrades the school district needs.

On Tuesday, the school district will have a public hearing for people to voice their opinion on the plan.

The plan includes repairs to the roof of Daviess High School, Tamarack Elementary, and new classrooms to Apollo High School.

The $66 million project list will be trimmed down to around $25 million.

Things that are the highest priority like repairs and safety concerns will be pushed to the front of the plan and the other projects will be pushed back. The money used to fund the projects comes from nickle taxes and will be spent over four years.

"Some of the things that deal with additional space and square footage, after conversations with our administration no one feels that is likely to occur. So we can take care of those maintenance issues now," said David Humphrey, Facilities Director for Daviess County Public Schools.

The board will have another meeting on Thursday to discuss whether to approve the "reduced cost" plan.

If the plan is approved, it will go to the Kentucky Department of Education for review at their February meeting.
