The woman who raised Jacob Roberts is speaking out about why she thinks the man who opened fire and killed two people inside a crowded mall took such a violent and tragic turn.
In an emotional and tear-filled interview, Tami Roberts shared childhood photos of her son, talked about his dreams and revealed where she was Tuesday when she first heard about the shooting at Clackamas Town Center.
Tami Roberts told Fox 12's Jamie Wilson she was shopping at a Walgreens store in southeast Portland when someone ran in and announced a gunman was loose in the mall.
For a split second, she thought about her son and wondered if he might be shopping or seeing a movie.
She said she never imagined he was the one who pulled the trigger, killing two people, injuring a 15-year-old girl and then turning the gun on himself.
"I have no idea why this happened," she said. "Jacob is so funny. He would never hurt anybody on purpose."
Tami Roberts had raised Jacob Roberts since he was 2 years old, after her sister died. She said he would go target shooting with his father and she knew he owned one or two guns.
"They would go up into the woods and shoot tin cans," she said.
Tami Roberts said her son's dream was to join the Marine Corps. However, at age 17 he broke his foot and had several pins put in it.
She said because of that injury, the Marines would not take Jacob Roberts. She said his life began to unravel at that point.
"Jake and I kind of had a falling out about four years ago because he didn't want to get up and look for a job," she said. "His whole purpose in life had changed and he got really depressed and really angry and I don't blame him."
Tami Roberts said she hadn't spoken to Jacob Roberts in four years. She said she reached out to him with calls and emails, but he even blocked her on Facebook.
It's not the relationship she wanted with her only child.
"I just want to say my heart is breaking and I'm so sad," she said.
Tami Roberts wants the victims' families to know how sorry she is and that she understands their anger.
"I'm not proud of my child and every day of his whole life I was proud of him," she said. "I'm just not proud of him right now."
