PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

A Phenix City teacher has admitted to taping two of her students together.

Authorities say Sierra Pettway, 24, was arrested Thursday morning and charged with two counts of willful abuse of a child after an investigation this week by the Alabama Department of Human Resources.

Pettway is a first-year teacher at Phenix City Intermediate School. Superintendent of schools, Larry DiChiara said she is currently on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of further judicial proceedings. He added that he is not permitted to be involved in this investigation and Pettway's future will be decided by the state.

The superintendent said Pettway admitted that she taped two of her students together by their forearms because they were "fussing with each other" and not getting along. The alleged incident reportedly happened in the classroom in front of other students.

Following the incident, Pettway thought more about her actions and decided she needed to tell the children's parents what she did. After that, she reported herself to the school's principal.

The principal then forwarded the information he received to a school resource officer who in turned handed the matter over to the department of human resources and to the Phenix Police Department for further investigation.

School authorities learned about the incident Tuesday. Following an investigation, police contacted Pettway on Thursday and informed her that she would be criminally charged. She turned herself in at the police department then and was taken to the Russell County Jail.
