Red Cross helps Tri-State family after fire destroys home

Posted: Updated:

Perry Co. and Marrs Township fire departments responded to a mobile home fire at 411 Elk Trail on the far west side of Evansville.

When firefighters arrived just before noon Wednesday, they say the rear end of the home was totally involved.

Authorities say a man and his 4-year-old daughter were home at the time and they were able to get out of the home safely. Officials say the child's mother was at work at the time of the fire.

Fire officials say several pets were also in the home at the time. They say two dogs got out the home safe, but a ferret and two gerbils died.

Authorities are calling the home unlivable and a total loss.

Neighbors say the folks who lived in the home had just done their Christmas shopping. Thankfully, the presents were being stored in the front of the mobile home and they made it out safely, still wrapped and everything

The Red Cross is helping by putting them up in a hotel. A neighbor says that family will need clothing donations.

Fire officials have ruled the fire as accidental. Authorities say a nearby AT&T line was damaged from the fire.
