SPENCER CO, IN (WFIE) -
This year many students in the South Spencer County School Corporation have had an extra tool to help them learn: iPads.
Administrators say this is just the beginning.
This is year one of a four year plan in the South Spencer County School Corporation. As teachers are finding out, those iPads are already a big hit with kids. That may not come as a big surprise, but just wait until you see who's using them.
South Spencer High School students tackle group projects on their new iPads.
"We use it to do our assignments. We can do it for research pretty much any way to make it easier," student Neal Poole said.
"We look at it as a textbook. It's a tool and if we don't provide that tool then they won't be prepared," said Superintendent Candis Haskell.
"I think most of the students think it was awesome. I thought it was awesome because I've always had an iPhone, so I'm always using mine whenever I can," a student said.
That's the idea, to make learning more accessible. It also seems to be more enjoyable.
"It's easier for me to learn on an iPad than a book. I just find it more interesting," Poole said.
The high schoolers aren't the only ones going high tech. Much younger students are even using iPads at school.
Like many preschool teachers, Janet Schipp teaches letters and numbers. Though, her four and five year olds learn them digitally.
"We learn this. It's some kind of math and helps us learn to read," the kids said.
"Oh yeah, they love the iPads," Schipp said.
Schipp says 13 of her 21 students have used iPads at home. Proof that this technology is becoming more and more mainstream. Which is why four years from now, the school corporation wants an iPad in every child's hands.
Next year, the plan is to get the iPads to middle schoolers and kindergartners. Then the following year to the elementary schools.
The fourth year is to follow up and make sure everything is in place.
