EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
There's was an outpouring of support for McFarland Baptist Church in Evansville on Sunday.
That's the church that had its heating and air unit stolen Friday morning for the second time this month.
It was cold inside the chapel Sunday morning, but that wasn't going to stop the church's small congregation from Sunday school and worship.
Thanks to a watchful neighbor, police caught 41-year-old Kenneth Hurtz dissembling and trying to steal an expensive heating and air unit early Friday morning, but water damage ruined the entire unit.
"When it first happened, we just couldn't believe it. We just thought, no, nobody's up on top of the roof taking our air conditioner, and just two weeks before that it had happened. We were just amazed," church member, Anna Kelley said.
A similar unit was stolen just two weeks ago. Church members, collected enough money to cover the insurance deductible, and this time, anonymous donations are coming from all directions.
"We've had such an outpour of concern. It's been a blessing to know that people do care and I know right here at the holiday everybody is strapped for money," Kelley said.
Church Pastor, Reverend Kent Hite, says other local congregations and people as far as Princeton have made donations.
"It's just overwhelming when you see something like that. Then your faith goes in and kicks in and you just rejoice because then you do know that it all comes back," Reverend Hite said.
Recent thefts haven't quieted the choir or hindered their time for prayer because Reverend Hite says their faith is strong.
"They were also concerned with us not having services because it was cold and no heat, but I said we're going to have to find someplace to have service because we have to let the enemy know he hasn't won," Reverend Hite said.
Reverend Hite says they've received enough donations to meet their $500 deductible. He also says it's hard to thank the anonymous donors, but without them their church would have been left in the cold this winter.
