14 News viewers offer to help Evansville church replace heating & air unit

Posted: Updated:

On Friday night, we told you about an Evansville church whose expensive heating and air unit was ruined overnight by an accused thief.

The system wasn't even a week old and had been installed to replace another unit that was recently stolen.

"I have to continue to keep the faith that something's going to happen. I don't know what. But if I'm going to preach faith if I'm going to preach forgiveness now is the time to have to stand on that," said Reverend Kent Hite.

Well something did happen after we aired the story at six on Friday.

Two calls came into the newsroom from viewers willing to help pay the church's insurance deductible.

Reverend Hite at the church says he received several calls as well.

Police arrested 41-year-old Kenneth Hurtz Friday morning in connection to the damaged unit.

They believe he was on the roof trying to steal it.

Police are trying to figure out whether he may be connected to some other thefts in the area recently.
