Church has to replace heating & air system for the second time in weeks

An Evansville church will be without heat for its weekend service. Its expensive system was ruined overnight.

Police arrested 41-year-old Kenneth Hurtz early Friday morning.

They believe he was up on the roof of McFarland Baptist Church, trying to steal the unit.

What makes this even worse, this is now the second time McFarland Baptist has had to replace its heating and air system.

It was stolen for the first time about two weeks ago.

A 911 call came in at about 1:40 this morning from a neighbor reporting someone on the roof of the church.

When police got there they say Kenneth Hurtz took off.

Officers chased after him and caught him.

Police think Hurtz had been on the roof taking apart the unit, some of it they say was already on the ground.

Reverend Kent Hite is the pastor at McFarland Baptist.

He says the first time around his congregation stepped up and donated money to pay the $500 insurance deductible and now they're back in the same position.

"I am just so thankful that somebody saw it and helped us out and reported this time," said Reverend Hite.

Kenneth Hurtz is in the Vanderburgh County Jail facing theft and resisting charges.

Police are trying to figure out whether he may be connected to some other thefts in the area recently.
