Man uses fishing rod to decorate large tree

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - One local man is taking the time and effort to light up his neighborhood with a unique tree.

John Kennedy lives along George Trask Drive and has a tree in his front yard that has a lot of people talking in the area.

The tree is 45 feet tall and Kennedy has taken the time and effort to transform it into the holiday spirit.

Kennedy said he has decorated it in past years but skipped last year.

"I had enough people asking me about it that I decided to put the lights on again this year," said Kennedy. But decorating the tree is no easy task.

Kennedy has to get help from neighbors to deck out the tree because it is so large.

Kennedy said the only way he can string the lights on the tree is with a fishing pole.

"I put a weight on one end and actually toss the lights over the top of the tree," he said. "If they don't land in the right place I have to bring the line back and do it all over again."

Kennedy said a number of people stop to take a picture of it. Others honk as they pass his house.

Kennedy intends to keep the Christmas lights up on his big tree for the next few weeks.
