In a local disaster, natural or manmade, the Community Emergency Response Team can be on the scene even before first responders.
The group, known as CERT, is recruiting new members. The held a meeting Thursday night at the Evansville Central Library.
While CERT already has more than 200 members, the group is really looking to expand its reach within the community and as more people are trained, the first responders will have less to deal with when a disaster strikes.
CERT trainees will learn basic search and rescue, first aid and even disaster psychology skills.
We're looking at trying to increase the preparedness of the community. Natural disasters occur all over the united states at any time. So to get the level of preparedness up for the community is beneficial for everyone.
The classes are free to anyone who's interested. You do have to be 16 years or older to participate , though.
CERT members say it's just such a rewarding experience to help out their community in a time of need.
