In Perry County, a disturbing case of cemetery vandalism.
Family members of those buried in that cemetery were shocked to find several gravestones smashed.
The Beard Cemetery might be quiet now, but that wasn't the case earlier this week when someone came through smashing gravestones and taking pieces with them.
Penny James stopped by the cemetery Monday afternoon to leave a Christmas arrangement on her father's grave. She says she was stunned to see her oldest brother's gravestone was smashed.
"and I was just bawling, it's just devastating to me, it broke my heart and I'm just glad my parents weren't here to see it," said James.
Two other gravestones, dating back more than a hundred years were also damaged. The stones have tool marks the family says, as if someone chiseled off the pieces they wanted.
Penny and her uncle Harold have more than ten relatives buried at the Beard Cemetery.
"It's just not right for somebody to do something like this, it's just not right. To me I think it's as low as a person can get, going into the cemetery and destroying it," said Harold Sturgeon.
They're both left wondering. Why their family? Why in a cemetery?
"It's just terrible, I just don't understand, I don't know why someone would do something like that," said Sturgeon.
"More than anything I want to know why somebody would do such a thing," said James.
The family says they want justice and don't want to be reminded of the cruelty everytime they come to visit their loved ones.
