Lightning strike apparent cause of apartment fire

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Sixteen families were forced out of their homes Tuesday night after an apparent lightning strike caused a fire at their apartment complex.

The incident happened just before 6 p.m. at the Hillview Woods Apartment Complex on Waterwood Lane near Preston Highway and the Jefferson-Bullitt County line.

People who live there insist lightning struck the building, rattling it and them.

"Suddenly it was like, boom, and I ran out, like, ‘What's going on?' and the other guy said, ‘There's a fire in my apartment.' So then we just kind of skedaddled outside," said resident Sharon Coleman.

"It sounded like a bomb, so she came out here and checked, and we saw fire," said resident Destinee Hammon. "And the next thing we knew, all these fire trucks were coming."

Fatina Qualls came home, only to leave again. "Now we have to move out for a couple of days, so a little inconvenience, but at least everyone is safe," she said.

Using flashlights, Qualls and other residents grabbed what they could. "I'm going to my sister's house, "Qualls said.

Firefighters said most of the damage was confined to two units.

The Hillview Woods Apartment Complex was the scene of a fire in March 2011. Damage was more extensive then, but no one was hurt.
