Some workers in Henderson are out of a job Tuesday night after River Metal Recycling decides to stop part of their operations.
Job loss is never good news, but it is coming at an especially bad time for some men and women with the holiday season upon us.
Some told 14 News Tuesday night, they have small children to buy gifts for and bills to pay.
River Metals Recycling has 10 locations in the Midwest. They say they are stopping their shredding operations at the plant in Henderson.
One of the former employees tells us there are about a dozen workers on the shredder that are now without a job.
Many who have been with the company anywhere from 10 to 20+ years.
The employee tells 14 News they had been working less hours per week, but had no idea they would be fired, and so unexpectedly.
Most were let go Monday and handed a severance package.
"Everybody was told just be there, most of us got our packages at work, they hand them to us. That's it, they hand us this right before Christmas. They want to do something like that, and that was it, that was pretty much the end of the conversation with them."
A spokesperson for River Metals says the employees were offered to re-locate to another plant. The closest is in Louisville.
Some employees thought the plant would be closing all together and moving operations to Louisville, but the spokesperson says that is not the case.
They are only idling shredding operations because of the current cost of metal being low.
They say River Metal Recycling has been in Henderson for about 25 years and will continue to be here.
Employees 14 News spoke with say they hope they can find another metal recycling job in the area, but are worried because the value of metal has decreased.
