The man has now been identified as 55-year-old Lindal M. Johnson of Evansville. His autopsy was scheduled for late Tuesday morning.
Dispatchers tell us this started with a report of vandalism around 1:00 a.m. Tuesday morning on Broadway.
Officials say a call came in from the Marathon Station on Broadway Ave. alleging that Johnson had smashed someone's car window with a golf club.
Officers with the Evansville Police Department responded to the initial vandalism call but determined that the alleged vandalism incident took place at 6011 Short Selzer Road which is out of Evansville City Limits. EPD then notified the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office.
Vanderburgh County Sheriff Eric Williams says when deputies confronted Johnson, he became aggressive. Officials say Johnson attacked the deputies with a variety of objects including a hatchet and the deputies responded by using their Tasers on Johnson.
Authorities say that the Tasers did not stop Johnson. That's when Sheriff Williams says the deputies took action to defend themselves and shot Johnson.
Paramedics responded but pronounced Johnson dead at the scene.
Sheriff Williams tells 14 News the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office has had prior dealings with Johnson.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
