Rays of Sunshine being spread around Warrick Co. this holiday season

Donations during the holidays come in all shapes and sizes. In Warrick County, families are working together to pay it forward all year long.

Rays of Sunshine are spreading through Warrick County thanks to a new program geared toward helping those with the little things. The hope is that those acts of kindness have a ripple effect throughout the community.

It's not limited just to the holidays, it's an everyday way to make someone smile.

"We had taken something to them and the smile on their face, it was just outstanding. Whenever you handed them something, you could just see it. I thought to myself, that is like a ray of sunshine whenever you're helping someone," said Tina Brown with Warrick County Awareness.

And with that thought, the paying it forward campaign called Rays of Sunshine, was born.
The idea is simple. Residents can apply for assistance for themselves or others, and organizers with Warrick County Awareness reach out to the community online to fill those needs.

"Sometimes a simple thing like a smile is enough to make somebody's day," Brown said.

A smile Kelly Privett shares with her daughter Alicia, because they received a new bed through the program. She says it was overwhelming.

"And I asked, 'do I owe you anything,' she said, 'we do take donations, but the biggest thing is to pay it forward,' and I cried. I'm going to cry again. It feels like Christmas," Privett shared with 14 News.

Alicia was ecstatic to have her own bed and says it matches her butterfly themed room. She also says she's excited to be spending her first night off the air mattress and in her big girl bed.

"It's good to know there's good people like that out there," Privett said.

Kelly says she's going to pay it forward by volunteering with children at Chandler Elementary.

If you'd like more information or an application to give or receive a Ray of Sunshine, head to the Warrick County Awareness website.
