Cannelton brings new substance abuse policy to school bus drivers

CANNELTON, IN (WFIE) -

The Cannelton School Corporation has decided to implement a new substance abuse policy for school bus drivers.

School Superintendent Al Sibbitt says the new substance abuse policy for bus drivers is standard, but that it's a first for the school system.

Sibbitt says the policy was approved earlier this month by the school board, since the corporation recently purchased its first school bus.

Sibbitt says Cannelton students have used Tell City school buses over the years, so there had not been a need for this kind of policy within the Cannelton School System.

Now, since Cannelton is offering bus rides, Sibbitt says he feels the need to implement the new policy which includes random drug testing of drivers.

"It's just a standard policy that most school corporations have that our bus driver and substitute bus drivers will be randomly tested for drugs," Sibbett said.

Sibbitt says he is happy to have this policy in place, as parents can now be reassured their kids are safe when traveling to and from school.
