HENDERSON CO., KY (WFIE) -
Look for new changes along the Henderson riverfront.
The focus is on the Old Power Plant that has been vacant since 2008.
The city says it's been about five years since this building was last in use, and since Station One was built specifically as a power plant, it makes the option of re-purposing it a bit tougher.
"The main question ahead of us is what are we going to do with that building?," Henderson's Mayor Steve Austin tells 14 News.
Henderson's Old Power Plant or Station One has set vacant on Water Street for five years. Now, residents are hoping there's a fresh use for the space.
"Just letting that building set there is kind of an eyesore on some very valuable property," Henderson resident Jim Martin.
Mayor Steve Austin says due to some environmental issues clean-up of the existing space alone would cost over a million dollars.
Several local, state, even national experts have taken a look at the 60,00 square foot building and Austin says it would be difficult and extremely costly to use the existing building for a new purpose.
"A lot of that square footage is in a double-basement situation, a two basement situation that's not real useable," Austin said.
One option, tear the building down and sell its material and equipment and turn the new space into something for the community.
"Some kind of shopping, some kind of dining. We've heard some discussion of maybe a boutique hotel might could go there," Austin said.
But whatever the final decision is, some residents tell 14 News that they hope it's one that brings even more life to Henderson.
"We need something on the riverfront, a restaurant, hotel, that will draw people downtown. More green grass will not do that," Martin said.
Mayor Austin says the city commission will hopefully make a decision on what to do with this property in the next couple months.
