Vanderburgh Co. Sheriff's Office welcomes three new deputies

Posted: Updated:

It was a big day for the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office, as they held a ceremony this morning to welcome three new deputies.

That ceremony took place at The Centre in Downtown Evansville.

The 3 new hires are Matthew Elrod, Christopher Buchanan and Shawn King. They were sworn in by County Clerk Susan Kirk.

Sheriff Eric Williams says the 3 new hires have a lot ahead of them.

This puts his staff at 109.

Their duties with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office begin immediately.

14 News spoke with one of the new hires who says working in the department as a civilian will help him with his work in the field.

"it gives you an opportunity to deal with some of the situations that you might encounter out there I would assume," said Chris Buchanan. "It gives you a better understanding of how the dept works. I enjoyed growing up here and it will give me an opportunity to give back."

They'll go to the academy in Plainfield and then do field training here in Vanderburgh County.
