Shoppers in Owensboro were out and about early Friday morning to take advantage of Black Friday deals, but not all of the stores looked like what you might expect the day after Thanksgiving.
By offering some pre-Black Friday hours on Thanksgiving, Kmart employees say that's resulted in a little bit of a different shopping atmosphere.
Unlike some other stores, most bargain hunters didn't have trouble finding a parking spot or a free cart at the Frederica Street Kmart.
Something else that was missing, a hectic and crowded environment.
Shoppers noticed it from the moment they walked in the door.
"It's very different not being so busy on this Friday," said Rebeka Howard.
Nancy Thompson said, "This is a much calmer atmosphere."
Kmart stores were open Thanksgiving from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. until 3 a.m.
They re-opened at 5 Friday morning.
Employees say the extra hours add some changes to the post-Thanksgiving rush.
"It's been a little bit different this year from the past. Actually, Black Friday's almost been replaced by Black Thursday. This was our first time in KMart having the additional hours," said Brian Schroeder, Frederica Street Kmart Manager.
Schroeder notes that problems with the extra shopping times have been limited.
"Pretty much smooth sailing, and the customers, they're pros at doing the Black Friday shopping, and the extra hours shopping, and they've been real nice," said Schroeder. "It's been really pleasant. We've had a lot of fun."
Shoppers seem to agree.
Nancy Thompson said, "This is very enjoyable. I had a good time. It wasn't real crowded. I got waited on right away. It was very pleasant."
The store on Frederica Street is open until 11 Friday evening.
The manager explains that Kmart's layaway plan has also been welcomed by customers on Black Friday.
He attributes it to the fact that some stores don't offer that option.
