Owensboro group fighting back against pornography

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

A group in Owensboro is fighting back against pornography by giving parents information they need to protect their families.

One of the reasons those at a the meeting Monday night say porn addiction is a growing problem is because of a smartphone. Nowadays, it's just too easy to find.

"I'm fearful they're going to stumble on it accidentally and I don't want it happening in my house," said Melinda Prunty.

Prunty went to learn what she can do to keep pornographic images away from her family because her grand kids are now at the age they like to get online.

"If a young person would stumble onto it, it could completely affect their relationships for the rest of their life. Maybe never even be able to form one," Prunty said.

"It's just a big mess of soup that they're swimming in and they just don't know it," said Joe Bland.

Bland works with young people in Daviess County and says he's seen that porn addiction is a real problem.

"It's a long dark hole they can go down and be hard to recover from it," Bland said.

But Sam Meier says he knows first hand that addicts can recover from it. As a counselor for the Archdiocese of Kansas City, he's worked with an anti-porn initiative since 2007. He believes technology is the number one reason porn addiction is such a growing problem.

"When I was in high school, we had to kind of go out of our way to access pornography. Sure, some of us did that. But now with Internet, we have to go out of our way to avoid pornography," Meier said.

But he says there are ways to fight the temptations. He says keep laptops out of the bedroom, monitor children as they're doing homework, and if you think you might have a problem, don't be afraid to tell someone that you need help.

"I think often times when they're in recovery that there are so many others that are going through this, too. They find that strength and encouragement," Meier said.

They also said for those concerned about porn on smartphones, there are some parental control you can download online.
