Interstate 516 eastbound has reopened after a tractor trailer carrying camels, ponies, zebras and llamas overturned during rush-hour on Monday. It happened on I-516 under the Veterans Parkway interchange.
The animals were headed to the Universoul Circus. The circus is in Savannah from Nov. 21 through Nov. 25, according to its website.
"Well, the fire department had to come in to help remove some of the barriers that trapped the last two animals. They happened to be camels. They had to use pnuematic cutters to get them free. They're in the process of doing that now. As soon as we have the animals out, then we'll right the trailer and get it out of here," Julian Miller, SCMPD's public information adminstrator told WTOC.
Miller said that Southside EMS helped one of the llamas with a cut nose, but they seem to be doing alright. He said animals experienced bumps and bruises.
