A Tri-State Red Cross worker is in New York on Sunday helping in the recovery after Hurricane Sandy.
Julie Krizen has only been in New York for about a day and a half, and she used one word to describe the experience so far- inspiring.
Krizen says she and local volunteers arrived in Coney Island Saturday afternoon, immediately began handing out meals and supplies, and providing emotional support to hurricane victims.
Sandy struck the New York area just about three weeks ago, but Krizen says the devastation is still extremely widespread. Despite the physical and emotional toll the hurricane has taken on the people in the New York area, Krizen says most are upbeat and are hard at work rebuilding their lives and she says she is proud to be a part of the relief effort.
"Today, I was in Staten Island and the devastation was just really intense. The pictures don't really do justice, but when you're actually there, it's just really heartbreaking. These people lost everything that they own. So, we're just trying to do what we can to help and be available for them," Krizen said.
