Last week, Patriot Coal Mine announced plans to close its Bluegrass Mine Complex in Henderson County by the end of the year.

Employees who will be losing their jobs at the surface mine attended "Rapid Response" program Thursday to help them find new jobs or receive training for a new career.

The federally funded program helps provide new job skills to employees affected by lay-offs and company closings.

Coal Miner Tim Ball says he hasn't thought about what's next, because he's still in shock after learning he would be losing his job next month.

"I think this program will help people have options to do some things maybe outside of coal mining that they've never thought about. You know, you lose your job, it's time to seek new opportunities and hopefully this group here will be a springboard into doing whatever you want to do next," Ball said.

Members of the Kentucky Career Center conducted the Rapid Response program which is a free service to the community.
