Memorial Day weekend equals the unofficial beginning of summer and great pool weather.

Since it already feels like winter in the tri-state, it's the perfect time to prepare for the upcoming cold season.  In fact, this is Winter Weather Awareness Week in the state of Illinois.

There are several things to keep in mind to prepare for the season ahead.

First, know what the potential hazards are, including ice storms, snow, extreme cold and even flooding.

Next, be prepared for those hazards by creating an emergency kit for both your car and home which includes items like food, water and a first aid kit.  The Red Cross has some excellent ideas here: http://www.redcross.org/prepare/disaster/winter-storm.

You should also make sure you stay informed of any potential storms that may impact travel.

It's also a good idea to review winter terminology.  An advisory means winter conditions will cause a significant impact.  A watch means winter storm conditions are possible within 36 to 48 hours.  A warning means life-threatening winter conditions are expected within 24 hours.

Indiana's winter weather awareness campaign is the week of November 17th.
