This weekend, USI students are trying to break a world record.

This Saturday, an engineering class will launch its ninth annual balloon flight. They will attempt to set a new world record for the highest altitude for the release of a paper airplane. The current record is held in the UK and that team's been following USI's attempt.

"The class is very excited that the people from the UK took extreme interest in us they actually sought out our professor to have an interest in what we are doing. They actually wished up the best of luck beating their record and we intend on doing soon Saturday," student Matthew Conville said.

The class plans to launch the balloon from a site near Rend Lake in southern Illinois, and retrieve it in southern Gibson County.

You can see the trajectory of the balloon and airplane online here. Make sure you type in W9MOK into the track callsign box in the upper right hand corner.
