Some fire stations in Evansville are getting some much needed repairs including Firehouse 14, which was in danger of closing not long ago.

Enough is going on inside to close down the station. It's been empty for about a week as those improvements are being made.

Aside from paint going up on the walls, all is quiet around Fire Station 14.

That's because firefighters like Private Timothy Olson are temporarily living under a different roof.

"We came over here, I guess it was Tuesday of last week," Olson said.

For Olson and his fellow firefighters, here means Station 16.

Their home away from home as work continues back at their place.

According to the city, all but one of Evansville's 14 fire stations have already or will undergo improvements and updates, and Station 14's list is the longest.

"Of course, we're getting all brand new cabinets here," said Dan Grimm.

Chief Administrative Officer Dan Grimm says that goes along with a new roof, new floors, and updates in the restroom.

"They're excited that the guys are actually going to be able to have a place to come that's more user friendly and more like home," Grimm said.

Some of the upgrades at the stations are being paid for with a County Option Income Tax refund from the state.

This summer, Mayor Winnecke announced around $1.2 million would be used.

"It's a little bit nicer to have the comfort of knowing they're taking care of us even though they aren't there every day they're caring about our well being and those type of things like that. So, it's nice to know that those things are being done," Olson said.

Another plus happening here at Station 14, some work is being done to prevent water from getting inside. Standing water was at times a problem, but hopefully won't be once all of that is complete.
