GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) -

The story of ten Gibson County residents part of a medical experiment gone wrong in 1927 while they were young kids will be the focus of a presentation being shared Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Many of you may have heard of this story before, the story of ten children from Lyle Station whose parents were lead to believe there was a new cure for scalp fungus or ringworm.

Instead, the parents had signed a waiver for their children to be part of a medical experiment at Gibson County Hospital where they were treated with radiation.

All ten suffered severe physical complications, one individual, Vertus Hardiman, a five year old at the time walked away with a hole in his scalp.

The author of a new book and documentary, Hole in the Head, knew Hardiman from church and never knew what he was hiding underneath a hat and wig until one day in tears, Hardiman recounted the story.

Author Wilbert Smith, an All-State Insurance agent whose never done a documentary before this, says he was compelled to tell Hardiman's story.

The showing is Wednesday night at Vincennes University's Ft. Branch location on Highway 41 at 6:30 p.m.

Smith says you will cry, laugh, and walk away a changed person.

It will also be shown Wednesday night in Jasper at 6:30 p.m. eastern time.
