The Mt. Carmel Clerk's Office confirmed Tuesday, Mt. Carmel Police Chief Jeff Besing has taken a medical leave of absence and City Clerk Rudy Witsman says Besing's leave of absence stems from an injury he suffered over three years ago.
Witsman says Besing broke his fibula in the line of duty back in March of 2009.
Since then, Witsman says Besing has suffered recurrent blood clots, for which he is now being treated. Initially, Besing was said to be on 'administrative leave,' but that distinction was changed to 'medical leave', exactly one week ago.
Witsman says Besing was initially put on 'administrative leave', because the scope of Besing's medical condition was not known at the time.
Witsman also says Besing's 'medical leave' of absence is to last no longer than the end of February. And if it does surpass that allotted time, Witsman says Besing has agreed to retire.
"At that time, both parties would discuss this and we'll see, at that time, what's going to happen," Witsman said. "He is free, at this time, to seek other employment, if he so chooses."
The City Clerk's Office says an interim Police Chief will be selected, though no decision on that has yet been made.
