Several taxi companies offering free rides to the polls

Posted: Updated:

Several Vanderburgh County taxi companies are offering free rides to the polls.

Unity Taxi and Dave's Taxi both say they will available to give safe rides Tuesday to anyone who needs it.

Unity Taxi owner Bill Kramer says they have been providing this service ever since the 2008 election. Kramer says many people have called Unity Tuesday looking for help getting to those polling centers.

Kramer says the high call volume is encouraging to him, as this indicates a very strong voter turnout within the Evansville community. Unity Taxi may be losing money on this deal, but Kramer says it is worth it on Tuesday, as he believes in the importance of voting.

"I appreciate Unity Taxi service for bringing me to the polls, otherwise I may not have been able to get here to vote. And it was very , very easy. I just gave them a call and they got us here," voter Tabatha Smith said.

Dave's Taxi says call anytime between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The company says offering this service is just a way to give back.

"A lot of men and women have died for our country so that we'd have the right to vote. We feel that anyone who has the opportunity but is not able to go to the polls, we want to make sure they are able to cast their vote," said David Goldblatt of Dave's Taxi.

The Democratic and Republican parties both say they will also arrange rides for voters.
