Winter weather workshops succumb to budget cuts

Posted: Updated:
Each fall, the National Weather Service in Paducah holds winter weather workshops for area emergency managers, meteorologists and various government employees to get a sense of what they're expecting for the upcoming winter season.
But this year, those meetings will be much different.  In fact, workshops in Evansville, Cape Girardeau and Grand Rivers were cancelled.  Ongoing budget and travel restrictions were cited as the reason for the cutbacks.
As an alternative, the weather service will hold one winter weather workshop at West Kentucky Community & Technical College in Paducah and stream it via a webinar for participants who can't make it on site.
The NWS also had to scale back the number of severe weather workshops they held this year due to budget concerns.
The National Weather Service is one agency within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA).  The 2012 NWS budget included a decrease in several million dollars over past budgets and the proposed 2013 NWS budget would cut funding even further.
