EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
Evansville is a step closer to tearing down Roberts Stadium.
The Parks Board awarded the demolition contract Thursday morning. You may start seeing bits and pieces of the stadium coming down as early as this month.
It's hard to imagine a landscape without Roberts Stadium, yet that may be a reality by may of next year.
The Parks Board awarded the bid to Klenck Co of Evansville for $958,000.
"I'm glad all of this is over and we're gonna be moving on," said Denise Johnson, Director of City Parks and Rec. "I think there's some exciting things to come."
Those changes should start as soon as next week when the winning bidders of August's auction start to take home the doors, windows and other pieces of Roberts Stadium they bought.
"I believe from November 5th to November 12th they are allowed to enter the property and get those items off site. And I think the 12th is the last day for that," said Johnson.
After that you'll start seeing fencing go up around Roberts, as Klenck starts setting up.
The city says it already has the funds for the demolition set aside, but there is a chance the final cost may come out lower than $958,000.
"As with any construction project, once you get into it, you can look for different means and methods of implementing some cost savings measures," said Osman Mufti, City Attorney's Office.
However it measures up, one thing is certain, Roberts Stadium is coming down.
You might be able to take home a piece of Roberts Stadium as well.
Denise Johnson says the Parks Board is discussing possibly letting residents pick up bricks for free after the demolition.
We'll keep you posted.
