Indiana State Police arrested 42-year-old John B. Ulrich, of Evansville, after an investigation determined he allegedly embezzled more than $60,000 from the Erie Canal Beagle Club near Lynnville.
Indiana State Police initiated a criminal investigation on August 9th after receiving information Ulrich was possibly stealing money from the club's checking account. Club members were in the process of auditing the checking account when they noticed several discrepancies. Ulrich had been the club's treasurer since December 2008.
During the investigation, detectives say they were able to determine that during the last five years as club treasurer, Ulrich allegedly issued himself numerous checks from the club's checking account for his personal use that totaled nearly $48,000.
Officials say additional checks totaling over $12,000 were issued to numerous businesses for items that were not authorized by Erie Canal Beagle Club.
Ulrich was arrested at his home Wednesday afternoon without incident and taken to the Warrick County Jail.
He was later released after posting a $4,000 cash bond.
