OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

Students at Owensboro's Sutton Elementary School are going to the polls this week.

The mock election is a national program for schools to get kids excited about the voting process. Students get the feel of a real polling place by signing in and stepping up to a computer which gives them the choice between Obama or Romney.

Teachers say it's important to start early with teaching kids about voting.

"If we get students voting every four years at the educational level, that by the time they turn 18 and can vote, then they will be more likely to vote as an adult," teacher Jamie Self said.

The Every Kid Votes polls were set to close Tuesday, but have been extended to Friday to accommodate all of the kids affected by Hurricane Sandy.
