LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – It was a horrific scene Monday afternoon when a bus carrying pre-school aged children crashed into a tree in Carroll County.
The bus was carrying nine Head Start students and two adults when it crashed on a narrow country road. Two children were killed. Others were sent to Kosair Children's Hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Some of the children were trapped inside the bus until rescuers could free them. But when you look at the mangled bus wrapped around a tree you wonder how any of them survived.
Six children, all five years or younger, were rushed to Kosair Children's. As of midday Tuesday, two of the children have been discharged but four others are still being treated. Three of them are in intensive care.
Trooper Brad Arterburn of the Kentucky State Police Campbellsburg post said the accident happened on a small, narrow country road. Arterburn said the road has with no lines and no center line. Troopers are still investigating the crash, but Arterburn said at this time they don't know why the bus lost control.
In a statement, Lisa James, superintendent of the Carroll County School District said:
"We are most concerned about the children involved and their families. Counselors and administrators have been present at area hospitals with families of some of the children involved in the accident."
Counselors were also on hand at all schools in the district Tuesday.
