SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -

There were fewer injuries and fatalities from vehicle accidents with deer last year in Illinois.

The Illinois Department of Transportation released statistics Monday showing the decline. There were six fatal accidents during 2011. That's down from ten in 2010. There were 613 injuries during 2011, down from 634 in 2010. The total number of deer-related accidents during 2011 was more than 18,000. That total was about 17,100 in 2010.

Transportation officials say most crashes were in rural areas or at twilight or night. They urge motorists to be cautious because deer are most active during fall and winter.

Cook County had the most deer and vehicle collisions at more than 550. The top ten counties, in order, include: Madison, Peoria, Will, Fulton, Sangamon, Kane, Pike, Lake and LaSalle counties.
