Aces women picked 10th in MVC poll

Posted: Updated:

The University of Evansville women's basketball team was picked 10th in this season's Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Poll, as announced by the league office Monday morning.  The poll was voted on by the league's head coaches, sports information directors and media members, with each school receiving four votes.

The Purple Aces went 5-25 last season and finished 10th in the Valley standings with a 2-16 mark in conference play.  UE returns eight letterwinners and three starters from last year's squad, including senior Samantha Heck, who led Evansville in nearly every statistical category last season.

Creighton was picked as the Valley preseason favorite receiving 26 of 40 first-place votes for 382 points, Wichita State (347) was slotted second with 12 first-place nods and Illinois State (323) was selected third, garnering the final two first-place votes.

Northern Iowa (272) was predicted to finish fourth, followed by Missouri State (265), Bradley (144), Indiana State (135), Southern Illinois (123), Drake (121) and Evansville (119).

In addition, the Valley announced the 2012-13 Preseason All-MVC Team, which featured five players from five different league teams.  Creighton's Carli Tritz was named the MVC Preseason Player of the Year and was joined on the squad by Wichita State's Jessica Diamond, Northern Iowa's Jacqui Kalin, Illinois State's Jamie Russell and Missouri State's Christiana Shorter.

The Aces will open their 2012-13 campaign with an exhibition contest against cross-town rival Southern Indiana Nov. 3 at the Ford Center, prior to opening the regular season Nov. 9 at Ball State.
