Number of arrests in Madisonville up compared to last year

MADISONVILLE, KY (WFIE) -

Madisonville Police say there's been a nearly 25 percent increase in arrests compared to this time last year. What's behind this spike in the numbers?

The Madisonville Police Department says this spike in numbers is greatly because of some new tactics they started using earlier this year.

The MPD's new approach involves putting statistics from past crimes into a database, and then focusing their attention on problem areas or those with the most crime related activity.

The department says their mainly seeing an increase in arrests for DUI's, drug activity related to marijuana, and car related thefts.

Authorities say this year their numbers for DUI's are about double what they had last year. As for car related thefts, Chief Wade Williams says their new approach is cutting down on people getting away with these crimes.

"They're very hard to solve, so with these predicted policing technologies and tactics that we're using, we're able to get in those areas and pick up those people before they even continue that string of theft. So that's why I think we're shutting a lot of that down," Chief Williams said.

Williams says he wouldn't be surprised to see these numbers gradually increase over the next few months but then level off going into next year.
