Students working to Make A Difference

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

AmeriCorps students at USI made a difference on Friday.

They tackled several projects at the YMCA's Caldwell Outreach Center.

Students in the University of Southern Indiana's AmeriCorps Program and students in the Evansville Housing Authority's YouthBuild Program came together early Friday morning to paint, make repairs and complete projects.

In the spring, these same organizations built two accessible garden beds and a shelving unit in the Culver Hoop House, an urban gardening partnership between the EVSC's Culver Family Learning Center and the City of Evansville.

Organizers say these projects help the students learn skills they can use in daily life.

"It's one thing in a classroom to learn and those things are great, but to actually go out in the community and get hands on experience building a shed, putting up shelves in a storage unit. Those are the things that really help the students learn first hand what it's like to work," said Sean Kuykendall, the executive director of the Community Outreach Branch.

Once they have a nice day when it isn't raining, the students will work on an outdoor storage unit for the Caldwell Center.
